Price: $5,950,000 The Skinny: Built in 2004, this Great Falls mansion bears a striking resemblance to Homewood House, a museum on the Baltimore campus of Johns Hopkins University, that was perhaps the most extravagant mansion of its day. Completed in 1808 after seven years of construction, Homewood was a wedding present from Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, to his profligate son, Charles Carroll, Jr. The younger Carroll spent four times the allotted budget and strained his father's patience building Homewood, which now serves as a museum, but it is certainly an architectural masterpiece. This Great Falls replica does an admirable job of emulating the original, while expanding the floorplan to nearly 22,000 square feet, with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, six fireplaces, and a swimming pool. The rear facade, with its pair of garish glass conservatories, is a let down; the maximalist interiors, if not to everyone's taste, are certainly impressive in their scale, but the kitchen leaves a bit to be desired.
