After the fiber-optic telecommunications concern Global Crossing entered bankruptcy in 2002—costing shareholders millions and eviscerating the company's 401k plans—it emerged that founder and CEO Gary Winnick had sold a large portion of his holdings for $734M shortly before the stock became virtually worthless. That earned Winnick descriptors like "callous" and "cold-hearted" and prompted blunt headlines like the New York Observer's "Gary Winnick Should Go to Jail." Little more than a decade later, Winnick, who never spent time behind bars, continues to have the last laugh, as his concrete company enjoys success and his Beverly Hills estate is reportedly being quietly shopped around for an astounding $225M. The Bel Air estate known as Casa Encantada, once the home of legendary hotelier Conrad Hilton, was purchased by Winnick in 2000 for a then-ridiculous $94M in cash and land.

↑ When Winnick went hunting for an appropriate office to house Global Crossing, he settled on the Beverly Hills business compound that was once the headquarters for the Music Corporation of America. The 124,000-square-foot offices were originally designed by legendary Los Angeles architect Paul Williams, who brought his traditional residential eye to the project, and were then expanded in the 1960s. During renovations costing more than $7.5M, Winnick reportedly built himself a replica of the Oval Office as his personal domain during his tenure at Global Crossing, a sign of inflated ego if there ever was one. The CEO purchased the office compound through Pacific Capital Group, his investment firm, for $41.5M in 1998, and then proceeded to lease the property to Global Crossing for a hefty $400,000 per month. In 2002, with the telecommunications company in shambles, the property was put on the market for an undisclosed price.

Born to modest circumstances in Queens, Winnick developed a taste for high-end New York real estate later in life, choosing Fifth Avenue's Sherry Netherland as his pied-a-terre. The apartment, described as "small" in news reports, received a full makeover from celebrated architect Charles Gwathmey and was later the subject of a spread in Architectural Digest. In 1999, Winnick attempted to trade up from this petite pad, but failed.

↑ Perhaps unsatisfied with the space in his Sherry Netherland pied-a-terre, Winnick agreed to pay $16M for Nelson Rockefeller's former penthouse apartment at 810 Fifth Avenue in 1999. Unfortunately for the soon-reviled businessman, the notoriously picky co-op board rejected his application, reportedly due to the fact that Winnick was planning a full gut renovation that would have inconvenienced other residents. That 17-room duplex would later be divided into two apartments, with one selling last year for close to $24M.

The Umschreibung, or "Rewriting," is a 30-foot-tall steel double helix created by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and erected in the middle of Munich, Germany, in 2004. Regarded simultaneously as a "staircase to nowhere," yet one of the most beautiful in the world, Eliasson's creation is but one of many that embrace the artistic potential of, say, transitioning between floors. Above, find 13 other stunning staircases that all break the classic center-hall Colonial mold.

House of the Day: An Antebellum Mansion Allegedly by U.S. Capitol Architect
Feb 19th 2013, 19:00

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Iron Station, N.C.
Price: $2,649,900
The Skinny: Built in 1817 for a French Huguenot family, the estate known as Ingleside is said to have been designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of the U.S. Capitol, though the state historic marker is quick to note "no documentation has been located to verify the claim." Now set on 75 acres, the brick mansion is impressive regardless of the true architect, with nearly 10,000 square feet, four bedrooms, five bathrooms, towering ceilings, intricate moldings, an updated kitchen, and even what appears to be a psychiatrist's home office. The sprawling grounds include a swimming pool with cabana, tennis courts, a series of chicken barns, historic smokehouse, two large barns and a potting shed. Currently listed for $2.65M for the full acreage, the property may also be divided and price reduced at the buyer's request.

Adventures in Interior Design: Exploring 'The Ultimate Guide To Pretentious Interiors'
Feb 19th 2013, 17:45

Screen-shot-2013-02-19-at-12.42.55-PM.jpgPhotos via Four Pins

Over on the snarky menswear blog Four Pins, writer Angelo Spagnolo offers a solid piece entitled The Ultimate Guide To Pretentious Interiors, taking down everything from small, framed artwork ("Whatever. Just have rectangular things arranged somewhat in line on your walls. But not too in line.") to lofted beds. Without further ado, here are Spagnolo's 10 best lines:

10. On bookshelves: "Your library needs to stretch to the ceiling. How else will people know how well read and cultured you are?"
9. On taxidermy: "And, I mean, the chemically preserved head of a woodland creature just makes the room that much more masculine, at least until you hang your floppy-brimmed super on trend hat from it."
8. On vintage reclaimed desks: "For doing all that, you know, drafting and other 'work' you do. 'I thought you were a consultant?' Yeah, but one day I'm going to finally write that play, right here, on this varnished desk."

7. On Dieter Rams products: "Just kidding, these only exist in photos on the Internet. Nobody has ever seen one in real life."
6. On "faux minimalism": "But the centerpiece of faux minimalism is the $5,000 mattress on the floor. Why would I need a bed frame? I'm a starving (finance) artist! The lower to the ground you sleep, the nearer to the essential human experience you are."
5. On plants: "Yeah, women love vines. Vines remind them of Tarzan. And Tarzan was a stud."
4. On disheveled white bedding: "Note: only photograph your disheveled bedding in low window light."
3. On clothing racks: "A dresser or any regular closet will not do. You need wrought iron and salvaged wood."
2. On unfinished hardwood floors: "And splinters from the unfinished wood flooring? Well, that's why you spent $350 on those ignorant Del Toro slippers."
1. On fireplaces: "And you better have chopped the wood yourself. 'Did you know chopping wood is one of the best full-body exercises? It's second only to…smangin'.' Bam, you're in. See how easy that was?"

Celebrity Real Estate: Pamela Anderson Lists Oddly Staged Malibu Beach House
Feb 19th 2013, 17:15

Pamela Anderson has owned her home in the Colony, Malibu's celeb-saturated enclave, for more than a decade, but in recent years the ex-Baywatch star hasn't been able to keep up with the area's cachet. In Nov. 2011, Anderson even stooped so low as to hawk the five-bedroom, 2,700-square-foot beach house on the rather pedestrian site Vacation Rental By Owner (VBRO) for $20K a week; now, faced with a bout of financial troubles, the actress has given up completely and listed the place for $7.75M. "The house just enveloped me financially and I didn't know how to handle it," Anderson recently said publicly, referencing the debt she's amassed from a multimillion-dollar renovation. While the listing pics show glimpses of hardwood floors, a sauna, and a modern roofdeck, the bulk of the remodel doesn't translate well, no doubt thanks to strange camera angles capturing things like the star's collection of perfume bottles. Still, with private beach access and a "Native American wigwam," it's a safe bet this is, in fact, a standout pad.

ELLE-March-%2713---Sasha-Adler-Sitting-Rm.jpgPhoto by Paul Elledge/Elle

The March issue of Elle offers a cute feature on the four-bedroom Chicago apartment belonging to Sasha Adler, co-design director at Nate Berkus' eponymous firm. Adler and her partner-in-crime, Lauren Gold, have been making a name for themselves for a while now, earning a spot on Trad Home's inaugural list of emergent designers to watch, in early 2011, and cutting their teeth on high-profile projects such as their boss' Chicago condo (which sold not long ago).

Anyway, described in Elle as one of "Chicago's authorities on fashion and design—flitting between chic store openings and fashion fetes," Adler bought the unit three years ago, lured by its century-old bones. Despite her being "totally inflexible about wanting a vintage apartment," as she says, the duo completely gutted the space, adding walls and bookshelves but retaining the original moldings. "I want it to look old," she explains. "I like to see the brushstrokes in the paint. I always want it to look hand done." It's easy to trace the origins of this particular aesthetic: Berkus, too, talks about loving "things that look like they have a story to tell" in the Nov. 2012 issue of Architectural Digest, which published his Manhattan duplex.

Standout features of Adler's eclectically decorated Lake Shore Drive home: those new wall-to-wall bookshelves (which are ever so coolly lacquered black), an Edward Wormley sofa (which was ever so coolly found on eBay), and artwork by Richard Serra and Massimo Vitali. And an antique Indian cabinet—either "an ancient Moroccan vessel where princesses once stored spices" or "a medieval dollhouse," as Elle's Julie Vadnal postulates—given to her by Berkus as a housewarming gift is "the most polarizing piece of furniture I own—people either love it or hate it," Adler says.

As an Italian-born fashion mogul with a jet set lifestyle, it might seem unlikely that former Gucci CEO and current Tom Ford chairman Domenico De Sole would want to decamp to blue hair-friendly Hilton Head, S.C., but the sleek modern abode he and his wife built there is also highly dissimilar from the cookie-cutter condos that dot this golfer's paradise. The couple opened their home to photographer Todd Eberle for a feature in the latest edition of WSJ., revealing De Sole's love for yacht racing, Hilton Head—where he has been vacationing since 1974—and their custom-built bungalow. The subtle, modern house was designed by Charleston-based architect James Thomas, who was unaware of the value of the couple's art collection when he first took the commission. Now the walls are full of works by "Cy Twombly, Brice Marden and Mark Rothko, alongside modern Italian artists such as Giorgio Morandi, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana and Alighiero Boetti," all kept behind glass to protect from the damp sea air. Despite the top-dollar art collection, the house is remarkably casual, albiet in a fashion don sort of way. Proof? There's a mudroom at the front of the house for hosing off sandy feet, but the towels are all Gucci.

Feb 15th 2013, 19:45

Adding to the great many inhabitable structures built from ice and snow, Utah-based artist Brent Christensen builds castles from icicles. Just because? Well, kinda: he began the craft one winter in hopes of finding something fun for his kids to do, and this idea of "ice castles" took off. Now his work, currently on display in Steamboat, Colo.—though last year it exhibited in the ultra-appropriately named Colorado town of Silverthorne—rises as high as 25 feet, thanks to 20-person crews "who work tirelessly to deliver Christensen's self-made icicles from his personal rack, where water drips and forms 3,000 to 5,000 icicles per day," according to My Modern Met. Inside the awesome mazes are archways, stairs, and walls, plus LED lighting, and nope, none whatsoever are reinforced by wood or steel. Another look, below.
