On the Market: Five Stunning, For-Sale Homes Designed by A.I.A. Fellows
Nov 30th 2012, 23:00

Each year, the American Institute of Architects grants a few exemplary American architects the title of Fellow of the A.I.A., an honor that has been bestowed on only two percent of the professional society's membership and reflects "outstanding contributions to the profession through design excellence, contributions in the field of architectural education, or to the advancement of the profession." As one might expect, these select few produce some of the finest contemporary American architecture, like this modern build in Rabun Gap, Ga. Designed by not one, but two F.A.I.A. architects, Mack Scogan and Merrill Elam, the concrete-and-glass compound was built in two stages, starting with the main house, in 1996, and concluding with the 2001 construction of the "mountain treehouse," a combination garage and glassed-in guest bedroom. All told, the country getaway holds five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and 21 private wooded acres and was listed last week for $1.55M.

↑ Where the Georgia home was tucked away in dense trees, this modern mansion in Scottsdale, Ariz. has views for miles, thanks to a ridge-top location and walls of glass. Listed for $4.4M, the house was designed by David C. Hovey in 2003. The 7,200-square-foot house has few solid walls, but still manages to contain five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The one-acre lot sits directly on one of Scottsdale's many golf courses, and the asking price includes membership in the Desert Mountain Club.

↑ Eight months ago, this Robert Gurney-designed Maryland modern was featured as a House of the Day, back when it was asking $7M. Despite a favorable response from commenters, the blocky house has failed to sell and has seen its price drop to $5.5M. Set among the trees on the banks of the Potomac River, the house has four bedrooms, seven bathrooms, an elevator, an infinity pool, and a five-car garage, all in more than 10,000 square feet.

↑ For less than the price chop on the previous place, a buyer could purchase this 3,100-square-foot Dallas condo, designed by Ron Wommack. The huge windows and open staircase lend the three-bed, three-bath unit an airy feel and a minimalist style. Completed in 2007 and first listed back in September, the home is currently asking $939K.

↑ Designed by a pair of A.I.A. fellow, Seab Tuck and Kem Hinton of Tuck Hinton, Sky High in Monteagle, Tenn. is based on traditional Tennessee tobacco barn. Completed in 1985, the interiors are a bit dated, but still have plenty of visual interest. Best of all, this is the cheapest house on our list, asking $749K. That price buys three bedrooms, four bathrooms, five wooded acres, and panoramic views.

BJArmstrong_NB_PICS1.jpgBillie Joe Armstrong, frontman of the ever-adolescent punk band Green Day, has listed his Newport Beach, Calif., cottage for $1.895M. The bungalow—which has an honest-to-goodness picket fence—is weirdly adorable for a house owned by a celebrity, especially for a rockstar, especially a rockstar who is prone to on-stage, profanity-infused meltdowns. Cookie Catastrophes: Chef Recreates the NYC Crane Collapse Out of Gingerbread

Manhattan's in-progress residential tower One 57, whose penthouse sold in May for upwards of $90M, earned global notoriety a few weeks ago when a massive crane collapsed in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, bringing on full-block evacuations and the expected dose of post-disaster lawsuits. Well, one pastry chef has taken all that jazz and made it just a bit sweeter by baking a five-foot-tall gingerbread model of the building and collapsed crane. On view at the restaurant inside Le Parker Meridien hotel, which is located right on said block of 57th Street, the confection consists of Rice Krispy squares clad with gingerbread "bricks," plus tiny edible police, firemen, street signs, and so on. Apparently the chef was "originally going to do the Statue of Liberty," he said. "But when the crane fell, I saw it. I was here. We were evacuated. It makes sense." Naturally. Anyway, only time will tell if this undertaking will be judged as one of the most insanely awesome gingerbread houses in modern history. View more photos over on DNAinfo.

Conversions: This Sleek Home is Cut From a 150-Year-Old Water Tower

Determined to live in a home with architectural interest, great views, and a central London location, one couple transformed an old water tower into an ultra-modern home. While the place now is all glitz and sheen—what with its dollhouse-like façade, nine floors, and 360-degree views—constructing the home was a hulking and decidedly unglamorous task. Before the structure could become anything close to livable, the contractors had to deal with the Venetian Gothic tower's six-foot-thick walls, steel tank, and the, uh, current residents—some 2,000 dead pigeons. But, thanks to what was probably an obscenely astronomical budget, it took all of eight months to carve out and construct the glass-encased manse, which boasts four bedrooms, a gym, a rooftop terrace, an elevator, and—sigh—a glass-walled viewing room at the tippity top of it all. The result is a structure that has got the old-vs-new collision that makes homes hewn from historic buildings not just pretty, but also so damn neat. And think, all it takes to create one of these bad boys is an old building, a bit of elbow grease, and, most importantly, an absolutely hemorrhagic cash flow. Anyway, see a few more photos below.

Recently spotlighted in Elle Decor is the Manhattan home of exotica-obsessed textile designer John Robshaw. Turns out the abode of John "I-Caught-the-Asia-Bug" Robshaw (seriously, that's how he's identified on his website) is exactly what one would expect: a veritable festoon of pattern, earth tones, and worldly, hand-hewn furnishings. Actually, the place is pretty much a Robshaw showroom—recognize that duvet? How about that spotted throw pillow? The fitted sheets? Yep, it's all of his own design. The decor is predictable, sure, but can't we all just take comfort in the fact that an all-Robshaw house is much lovelier (read: less torture chamber-like) than the all-Restoration Hardware home in Houston? Plus, the place is stuffed with some rather stunning global antiques like a Syrian dining table, Cambodian silk window shades, and an Indian chandelier. See it all above.

Floorplan Porn: Of the 12 priciest Boston sales...
Nov 30th 2012, 19:45

4500image.jpgOf the 12 priciest Boston sales of the year (so far), the cheapest is a 4,181-square-foot triplex that traded in August for $4.5M. It spent eight months on the market, which means the city must not have any clothes horses whatsoever: the four-bedroom home has a whopping 14 closets. It doesn't appear that any of them are ultra ridiculous or excessively large but, still, that's a heck of a lot of room to store those preppy cable-knit sweaters. [Curbed Boston]

House of the Day: This Rustic Compound is Highest Home in the San Juan Islands
Nov 30th 2012, 19:00

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Orcas Island, Wash.
Price: $997,000
The Skinny: The majestic San Juan Islands are one of America's most beautiful vacation destinations, at the extreme northwest of the Pacific Northwest. There is perhaps no better home to view the pristine waters and verdant hillsides of the San Juans than this rustic Orcas Island compound, which is the highest home in the archipelago, according to the brokerbabble. In total, the property has three bedrooms and four bathrooms split between four separate structures. Completed in 2002, the cabins boast staggering views but have their quirks, like a steep flight of stairs to one sleeping area and a small kitchen. Currently listed for $997K, this unique property should hook the next millionaire who makes the trek out to take a look at the remote hideaway.

Dwelling: 25 Cases of Eye-Achingly Intense Love-Era Wall Treatments
Nov 30th 2012, 17:15

Most of the time it's easy to list the virtues of dedication, but when it comes to wallpaper of the '60s and '70s, an obsession with one pattern can be, well, near painful to look at. While crazy wall treatments are not isolated to the decades of the love era—remember the wild papering job in Houston, the intensely toile Chinatown condo, or the home lined with 2,000+ pieces of paper?—designers of the 1970s seem to be the most pattern-happy by a mile. Just as it's a joy to look back at ideas from old shelter magazines or the kodachrome stuff of vintage Ikea catalogs, perusing the most jaw-dropping examples of decor inspiration from the 1970s means witnessing one of the most over-the-top decades of America's design history. Have a look above.

Video Interlude: Tour the White House Holiday Decorations With Bo Obama
Nov 30th 2012, 16:15

Screen-Shot-2012-11-30-at-9.19.16-AM.jpg

All American presidents leave their mark on holiday decorating. In 1923, Calvin Coolidge introduced the inaugural National Christmas Tree, festooned with more than 2,500 electric lights; in the 1960s, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy enacted Nutcracker decor and holiday decorating in the White House has been themed ever since. In short, it's all kept pretty restrained: no one ever sets the seat of power alight to, say, "Gangnam Style," and there's never an $11M Christmas tree.

That's not to say the Obamas haven't had their fun: two years ago celebrity designer David Stark was brought in to jazz up select rooms and a marzipan Bo the Portuguese Water Dog made an appearance next to the official gingerbread White House replica; last year there were 37 Christmas trees and a 400-pound gingerbread house, the largest ever in the history of the White House. This year it's all about "Joy to All," with 54 trees and patriotic wreaths and ornaments that "pay tribute to our Armed Forces and their families," according to the official site. And POTUS and FLOTUS aren't above the increasingly popular trend of using pets as architectural tour guides—in this case, please allow Bo to lead you around:

Architectural Craziness: Architects Propose 'Alien' Towers For—Where Else?—China

dezeen_zoomlion-headquarters-international-plaza-by-amphibianarc_ss_2.jpegRendering via Architizer

Architecture firm AmphibianArc has imagined a rather intriguing pair of office towers, which, as Architizer points out, look like they belong in an alien colony—or perhaps Elon Musk's future dominion on Mars. The structures, which feature fairly normal-looking towers with outerworldly add-ons, are proposals for the headquarters of Chinese manufacturing conglomerate Zoomlion in Changsha, Hunan. That's right, folks, again it's China, land of car-free pop-up cities and 515-foot standing rings.

Anyway, the rendering above in fact represents the seven founders of the company and not, as one may assume, a coniferous seed pod about ready to pop off the pine. The other rendering? Well, that one, below, has a vague resemblance to stacks of shipping containers or, perhaps, a half-finished game of Jenga, an aesthetic not unlike Indonesia's plan for a crazy vertical city. See it below.

dezeen_zoomlion-headquarters-international-plaza-by-amphibianarc_ss_8.jpeg

dezeen_zoomlion-headquarters-international-plaza-by-amphibianarc_ss_10.jpegRenderings via Architizer

Strange? Undoubtedly, but either of AmphibianArc's towers will be in good company, as Changsha is exactly where the world's future tallest tower will be built.

Globe Trotting: Escape Winter's Chill with These Five Tropical Private Islands
Nov 29th 2012, 23:00

One need not travel to the ends of the earth or spend $10M to secure a decent private island paradise, but, at least in the case of Fiji's Nananu-i-Cake Island, it sure doesn't hurt. The 600-acre isle sits just a short boat ride from the Fijian mainland, but is a nearly totally pristine example of conservation, save, of course, for the five-bedroom hilltop mansion, designed by architect Murray Cockburn. That grand house includes six bedrooms, a library, great room, a swimming pool, and a separate bure—a straw hut—used for outdoor dining. To make things easier on the millionaire buyer, the island comes in turn-key condition, including "staff quarters, tables, horse and sheep paddocks inclusive of stock, boats, jeeps," and a deep-water jetty.

↑ This tiny island in the Florida Keys, known as Melody Key, might not have the five white sand beaches of its Fijian counterpart, but it is cheaper, far closer to home, and has some celebrity provenance attached. Formerly owned by 311 frontman Nick Hexum, who sold it in 2011, the island has a solar-powered three-bedroom home that towers over the surrounding palms, providing views of the water beyond. Melody Key is currently listed for nearly $6M.

↑ Fans of Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic or handy buyers looking for a fixer-upper would do well to check out this currently run-down island in the Bahamas. Located just off the coast of North Eleuthera and across a bay from the discrete hamlet of Harbour Island, the 3.5-acre island is currently home to several decrepit buildings and a cesspool-like inlet, but is priced accordingly, at $1.5M.

↑ For something more substantial in the Bahamas, try Williams Cay, a 180-acre isle in the Exumas, not far from the island owned by A-lister Johnny Depp. The main house is a particularly bold shade of pink, but its 5,000 square feet hold six bedrooms and seven baths. The island receives shore power thanks to an undersea cable, but should there be a power disruption, a 100kw generator is available to provide backup. Further peace of mind comes from "1000 gallon underground diesel storage tank, two underground 1500 gallon gas tanks and a reverse osmosis water system." Listed for $21.9M, the island comes complete with boats and golf carts.

↑ This 510-acre undeveloped island lies off the north coast of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and packs in nearly every desirable island feature—multiple sandy beaches, lush greenery, turquoise water, and a mountain from which to take it all in—but it is one hell of a project. First, it's listed for a whopping $29.5M. But it is the fact that the island is completely undeveloped that's the real trouble, meaning everything from a dock to an undersea electrical cable to water treatment would have to be installed, at great expense, by the buyer. Good luck lottery winners!

On the Market: NYC Co-Op by the Late, Great Jed Johnson Lists For $12M
Nov 29th 2012, 21:29

The celebrated designer Jed Johnson, who died tragically in 1996 in the crash of TWA Flight 800, had a client list that included Yves Saint Laurent's partner Pierre Bergé, Mick Jagger, Barbra Streisand, and Richard Gere, but his success had very humble beginnings. Johnson first met artist Andy Warhol when he was hired to sweep the floors at Warhol's famous factory. He would go on to become Warhol's companion and lover—helping him find and decorate the East 66th Street townhouse where Johnson and the artist lived until the two split in 1976—as he built a reputation as one of the country's finest interior designers. In the year before his own untimely death, Johnson collaborated with fellow designer Thad Hayes on this sprawling NYC co-op, listed this week for $11.95M. Overlooking Carl Schurz Park and Gracie Square, the expansive six-bedroom flat occupies much of the seventh floor in 120 East End Avenue, a stunning pre-war building developed by Vincent Astor in 1931. Sixteen years later, it's difficult to say how much of Johnson's design survives, but it is reassuring that his reputation is still strong enough to warrant inclusion in the brokerbabble on this pricey home.
