As an Italian-born fashion mogul with a jet set lifestyle, it might seem unlikely that former Gucci CEO and current Tom Ford chairman Domenico De Sole would want to decamp to blue hair-friendly Hilton Head, S.C., but the sleek modern abode he and his wife built there is also highly dissimilar from the cookie-cutter condos that dot this golfer's paradise. The couple opened their home to photographer Todd Eberle for a feature in the latest edition of WSJ., revealing De Sole's love for yacht racing, Hilton Head—where he has been vacationing since 1974—and their custom-built bungalow. The subtle, modern house was designed by Charleston-based architect James Thomas, who was unaware of the value of the couple's art collection when he first took the commission. Now the walls are full of works by "Cy Twombly, Brice Marden and Mark Rothko, alongside modern Italian artists such as Giorgio Morandi, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana and Alighiero Boetti," all kept behind glass to protect from the damp sea air. Despite the top-dollar art collection, the house is remarkably casual, albiet in a fashion don sort of way. Proof? There's a mudroom at the front of the house for hosing off sandy feet, but the towels are all Gucci.
