House of the Day: Hurricane Sandy May Make Low-Lying Island a Tough Sell

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Cataumet, Mass.
Price: $4,500,000
The Skinny: Despite the charming and spacious summer cottage that crowns this 2.8-acre island off Cape Cod, it is hard to imagine buyers jumping at the chance to purchase such a low-lying property in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Yes, the 10-bedroom house has survived since 1891 in this location, and is protected from the sea by several barrier islands, but the issue here is consumer confidence, and flood insurance that may be prohibitively expensive. The sizable structure will certainly be enjoyable while it lasts, with a broad waterfront porch, four fireplaces, seven bathrooms, private beaches, and a deep-water dock. Rocky Island, as the property is known, is currently listed for $4.5M.
