Blockbusters: After 150 Years, de Guigne Heir Lists NorCal Estate for $100M

In the wake of news of the recent record-breaking $117.5M sale in nearby Woodside, Calif., it's no wonder that this sprawling historic estate in prime Hillsborough has also come to market with a nine-figure price tag, $100M to be exact. What might be surprising, however, are the terms of the sale. The property is currently owned by 75-year-old Christian de Guigne IV, whose family has held title to the land for more than 150 years. In 1914, de Guigne's late father began construction on the impressive 16,000-square-foot main house, with the noted architecture firm Bliss & Faville. The hilltop home now boasts seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a ballroom, a flower-arranging room, a swimming pool designed by landscape architect Thomas Church, and no fewer than six staff rooms. In an added quirk, de Guinge is retaining a life estate on the property, which will permit him to live out his life in the main house following the sale. Quite a stipulation, given that the property is now one of the five most expensive listings in the country.
