From the 1980s to the mid-aughts, the American suburbanite was almost certainly obsessed with the McMansion. You know, those overgrown, overstyled, architecturally underwhelming behemoths that came to grace nearly every American town. Some wanted one, some wanted to see them all torn down, and still others spent hundreds of thousands of dollars they didn't have acquiring one. The huge private palaces may have crushed many under a mountain of mortgage payments, but they started oh-so-innocently.
