Globe Trotting: In the Arctic Circle, A Cathedral Inspired by Aurora Borealis Feb 11th 2013, 18:15 Photo via DesignBoom About 310 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Norway stands the newly opened Cathedral of Northern Light, an Art Deco-ish landmark inspired by the waves of aurora borealis. Alta, Norway, a town known for its views of the natural light display, commissioned Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen to create a house of worship that celebrates the town's claim to fame. The result is a winding structure clad in titanium, with slotted windows and a 154-foot belfry tower curling upward. It's not the world's first swoopy-looking cathedral—there's even one cropping up in Miami—but it' might be the first sacred place inspired by the collision of particles in the world's northern-most regions.
