There isn't much to see yet at MahaNakhon, the rising 77-story tower that, when finished, will be the tallest building in Bangkok. As of late December—when Curbed NY editor Sara Polsky stopped by for the above look—much of the basement structure had been completed, and as of the end of this month, the CUBE building at the front of the site will be up to the fifth floor. So what exactly is coming to this lot in Bangkok's business district? The project, designed by Ole Scheeren of OMA, has five main components: apartments run by the Ritz-Carlton (renderings in the gallery above and on the sales site); a Marriott-Ian Schrager-designed luxury hotel; 10,000 square feet of retail space with a restaurant; a public plaza; and a Dean & Deluca (already open). The estimated completion date is sometime in 2014, and prices will reportedly range from $1M to $11M, pricey for Bangkok.
[A gallery of floorplans from the website for the residences.] MahaNakhon was announced after a similar looking project in NYC, but—in a twist not unlike the Zaha Hadid copycat in Chongqing, China, which is on track to outpace the original in Beijing—MahaNakhon will probably beat that project, 56 Leonard Street, to the finish line. 56 Leonard just recently resumed construction after several years of being stalled, and its target completion date is spring 2016.
